The cargo drop reel threefold retrograde system mounts to the bottom of the traveling surf. It works in conjunction with the cargo drop reel to lift loads from the deck of the receiving ship. The cargo drop reel hook is attached to the load and the threefold is attached to the cargo drop reel hook. Line handlers haul in on the threefold to lift the load while a cargo drop reel reels in the cargo drop reel hook.
