Marine Bronze
Marine bronze is a trusted choice below the waterline. It stands up well to salt water. It is often used for seacocks, thru-hulls, strainers, and pipe fittings.
Bronze is not the same as common brass. Some brass has more zinc. Salt water can remove this zinc over time. The part may turn pink, become weak, and feel rough or crumbly.
Stainless Steel

Marine-Rated Composite
An approved composite valve will not rust or cause metal-to-metal corrosion. It can also weigh less. The full group of parts must be made for use below the waterline. Do not use a common plastic house valve on a boat.
Seacock Inspection Checklist

Look for drips, green crust, rust, pink metal, deep pits, cracks, loose bolts, and broken sealant. Try to move the valve body by hand. It should stay firm against the hull.
Check the hose for cracks, soft spots, swelling, or rub marks. Make sure each clamp is in the right place and tight. The handle must move all the way without hitting other gear.
How to Care for a Seacock

Open and Close It
Turn the valve fully closed and open it again on a regular plan. This helps stop salt, dirt, and sea growth from locking the ball or plug.

Keep the Water Path Clean

Protect It From Freezing

When Should You Replace It?
Replace the seacock if it will not move, will not close, or leaks. Also replace it if the body is cracked, badly worn, or deeply corroded. Bad threads, broken bolt holes, or weak support are also warning signs.
